read: The Drowned Cities, by Paolo Bacigalupi.

This sequel to Paolo Bacigalupi's Ship Breaker is a lot darker than I expected, for a young adult novel. Life inland from the ship salvage yards of the coast is a dangerous life, what with different militias trying to wage war against each other for territory. For a decade or so, the Chinese government had occupied parts of the Eastern seaboard (well, post-climate-change seaboard) and had tried to pacify the region, but they failed, and eventually left. The story follows a child of a Chinese peacekeeper and an American mother, and her quest to do the Right Thing.
